Emergency Response Information
RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL IN EXCEPTED PACKAGES

1. Characteristics
  • Low level radioactive material: little personal radiation hazard.
  • Maximum radiation level on undamaged package surface: 0,005 mSv/h.

2. Hazards
  • In case of damaged packagings: risk of radiation and internal contamination.

3. Personal Protection
  • Self contained breathing apparatus.
  • Chemical protection suit if risk of personal contact.
  • Personal dose meter and doserate monitoring.

4. Intervention Actions
  4.1 General
  • Keep upwind.
  • Minimize number of personnel in risk area.
  • If required, notify Competent Authorities.

  4.2 Spillage
  • Avoid contact with spilled or exposed material.
  • Contain spillage by any means available.
  • Absorb liquid in sand or earth or any suitable material.

  4.3 Fire (involving the substance)
  • Extinguish fire by any means available but do not use water jet.
  • Remove undamaged packages away from heat radiation.
  • Minimize use of extinguishing media and contain runoff.

5. First Aid
  • Rescue casualties out of risk area if possible; be aware of radiation hazards.
  • First aid action must be undertaken only by responders wearing the appropriate personal protection.
  • Remove contaminated clothing immediately, protect respiratory passages (e.g. facemask) and drench affected skin with plenty of water.
  • Persons who have been in contact with the substance should get immediate medical attention. Pass on all available product information.
  • Mouth to mouth resuscitation should be avoided. Use alternative methods, preferably with oxygen or compressed air driven apparatus.

6. Essential Precautions For Product Recovery
  • Do not use standard recovery equipment. Seek specialist advice immediately.

7. Precautions After Intervention
  7.1 Undressing
  • Check personnel by radiation measuring, before removing facemask and protective suit.
  • Seek specialist advice for decontamination procedures.

  7.2 Equipment Clean Up
  • Seek specialist advice before leaving incident.
