Emergency Response Information
RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL, FISSILE

1. Characteristics
  • Degree of radiation varies from low to high.
  • Class 7 labels refer to the maximum radiation level on undamaged package surface: category I-white: 0,005 mSv/h category II-yellow: 0,5 mSv/h category III-yellow: 2mSv/h (transport under exclusive use: 10 mSv/h).

2. Hazards
  • May give off radioactive, toxic and corrosive fumes, when heated or burning.
  • Risk of chain reaction.
  • In case of undamaged packagings: risk of external radiation (substances of category II and III only).
  • In case of damaged packagings: risk of radiation and internal contamination.

3. Personal Protection
  • Self contained breathing apparatus.
  • Chemical protection suit if risk of personal contact.
  • Personal dose meter and doserate monitoring.

4. Intervention Actions
  4.1 General
  • Keep upwind – put on protection equipment before entering risk area.
  • PUBLIC SAFETY HAZARD – Warn people nearby and evacuate the danger area immediately.
  • Risk area: cordoning off at local legal dose rate.
  • Minimize number of personnel in risk area.
  • If required, notify Competent Authorities.

  4.2 Spillage
  • Avoid contact with spilled or exposed material.
  • Contain spillage by any means available.
  • Absorb liquid in sand or earth or any suitable material.
  • If substance has entered a water course or sewer, inform the responsible authority.

  4.3 Fire (involving the substance)
  • Do not use water or foam to extinguish.
  • Extinguish fire with dry agent.
  • Remove undamaged packages away from heat radiation.
  • Avoid unnecessary run-off of extinguishing media which may cause pollution.

5. First Aid
  • Rescue casualties out of risk area if possible; be aware of radiation hazards.
  • First aid action must be undertaken only by responders wearing the appropriate personal protection.
  • Remove contaminated clothing immediately, protect respiratory passages (e.g. facemask) and drench affected skin with plenty of water.
  • Persons who have been in contact with the substance should get immediate medical attention. Pass on all available product information.
